Spotlight On: Nom Kinnear-King

'Talented' wouldn't even begin to describe Nom Kinnear-King. The Norfolk native has an almost mystical ability to turn pencil, acrylic and oil into works that resonate with joy, with melancholy, and ever so often, with solitude.

The tin drum march

Her paintings and sketches, which prominently feature female characters, are richly detailed with colours and patterns which, although bright and commanding, never detract from the prime focus of her works: the women.

'Step together'

The characters in Nom's illustrations are, in turns, coquettish, wistful, lighthearted, brazen, and pensive. Their eyes speak of their dreams, their fears, their strength, and the many complexities of their personalities.

Some are guarded, telling you to stay away while simultaneously inviting you to come closer. Some gaze at you demurely, as though uneasy with your scrutiny. And some stare right back at you, lips quirked in smiles that are both enigmatic and insolent, daring you to understand them.

'Cream Thieves'

A final note: I admit a few of Nom's works reminded me of Francesco Clemente's portraits for the 1998 movie Great Expectations by Mexican director Alfonso CuarĂ³n.
