So it's been awhile since I got back from Melbourne. And yes, I really should have done a post on my week-long trip ages ago, but a lack of time and a crazy work schedule prevailed. 'Nuff said.
*As I write this, two weeks have passed since we touched down in the city electrified by perpetual motion. It's been seven years since I last visited Melbourne, and I'd forgotten how fast everyone and everything there seem to move. Exhilarating, but at the same time, a touch surreal.

One thing I've always appreciated about Melbourne is her ability to surprise. No matter how many times you go back, there will always be another gem (like this mural) that you'll discover tucked away somewhere in one of her many streets.

If it's distraction you seek, then this is definitely the place to be. With all the sights and sounds that wrap you up in a cloud of heady disorder, it's tough trying to figure out what to see and do first.

The other thing I adore about Melbourne? The plethora of eateries scattered throughout the city. With row upon row of cafés, restaurants, and bars offering pretty much every culinary delight known to man, I reckon it's damn near impossible to go hungry here.

I'm especially fond of St Kilda, thanks in part to a show I used to watch called 'The Secret Life of Us'. Kind of like 'Friends', except with more drama and an excessive use of thick Aussie accents.

We had perfect weather throughout the entire trip, with the exception of our last day there, when it inexplicably became cold, rainy, and completely inhospitable.

I must admit that the shot I took above is one of my favourites. In a place renowned for its frenetic pace, I was reminded all over again that it is possible to experience fleeting moments of quiet.

More than anything else though, I was predictably keen to get a feel of Melbourne's fashion pulse. To my surprise, I found that the city's fashionistas are very much driven by a herd mentality, adopting trends of the moment en masse. Flat boots were all the rage, as were leggings. Black seemed to be the colour du jour, which I really didn't anticipate. I suppose I expected to find a riot of colours and patterns, something more befitting of the chaos and liveliness that is the city. Even so, I persisted in my quest to obtain a halfway decent set of style shots, and I'm happy to report that my patience was rewarded on at least a few occasions:

dear stylemonger,
ReplyDeletei live in melbourne and i have to say, i never really noticed how beautiful melbourne is until i saw the pictures you took. you've made some acute observations as to the fashion scene here as well. we melbournites do have a fondness for the colour black, and fads are adopted very quickly by everyone and their mothers thanks to the many clothing chain stores. however, i feel melbourne is also home to a lot of individual style, and it is unfortunate you weren't able to witness it firsthand. to deprive you of the fashion diversity in melbourne would be a sin. here's a link to melbourne's version of "The Sartorialist". enjoy!
