I have an intense admiration for artists, mostly because I am somewhat artistically challenged. Translation? I can't draw or paint to save my life. Being able to reconstruct reality - in a manner of speaking - is a talent I find indescribably awe-inspiring. It almost makes me wish I'd stuck to my art lessons...despite my tutor's frequent laments that my work was more Picasso-after-his-fifteenth-bender than elegant-and-disciplined-Monet.
As disappointing as it was to realise very early on that I had no discernible painting abilities whatsoever, finding out that illustrator Nuno DaCosta is actually self-taught has given me hope that I might someday be able to produce work like this.
London-based Nuno specialises in fashion and beauty illustration, and actually hand-draws and paints his work with water colours and Gouache before retouching them with Photoshop. Go through his portfolio, and you'll realise very quickly how talented the man is.
With its fluid lines and meticulous attention to detail (the light reflecting off a collar sewn with beadwork; the glimmer in the eye of a crimson lipped coquette), it should come as no surprise that Nuno's artwork has gotten its fair share of attention both within and outside of the fashion industry. He's worked with the likes of international hairstylist Neil Moodie and makeup artist Lisa Butler, in addition to having his illustrations included in publications like Marie Claire and The Daily Telegraph.
