What is it about gorgeous shoes that make you feel sexy? Is it the illusion of long, shapely legs? Is it the way they add a certain je ne sais quoi to your ensemble? Or is it merely psychological?

I theorised it was the latter, much to the amusement of The Football Fanatic, who couldn't understand the significance of beautiful footwear. "I love stilettos," I proclaimed one night, on the way back from dinner. "They make me feel invincible."

FF laughed my statement off, saying it was all in my head. That may be so, but it made me wonder: to what extent do shoes really affect our mood?

I know that wearing flats - regardless of how much kinder they are to feet - make me feel like a kid. I hate the way I walk in them: a kind of clumsy, slap-slap-slapping that makes me cringe every time I catch a glimpse of my reflection.

But heels? Oh, how I adore walking in them. Sure, I'll feel like crap at the end of the day. But the thrill I get whenever I look down to admire my latest acquisition? Priceless.

I'm a firm believer in the saying that shoes are a reflection of your personality. Different shoes for different moods, right? And given that the average human being is a complex, multifaceted creature, it strikes me as odd that some people feel completely at ease only ever wearing one particular style of footwear, in one particular colour. FF, for instance, once told me he'd gone through an entire year wearing just one pair of shoes every day to work.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
