Vintage yearnings

"Kak E, you haven't updated your blog in so long!"

Baby Sis's accusation today brought to the fore my feelings of semi-guilt of late over having allowed my occupational obligations to get in the way of my Mongering. Do not fret, o pocket-sized sibling of mine, for I shall remedy the situation with a post borne of yet another bout of pining-for-more-things-I-don't-need-but-really-REALLY-want.

In keeping with my newly developed and all-consuming passion for channeling the retro vibe, I've decided I simply do not have enough vintage-inspired jewellery. Sure, I have my fail-safe pearl set to fall back on whenever I need something ultra-feminine to complement an outfit. But now I find myself longing for the thrill of something newly purchased.

Luckily, I happen to be really good - and really persistent! - at tracking down bargains online.

Jewellery styles may come and go, but I will always have a soft spot for vintage pieces. They possess a girlish charm and irresistible whimsy that none of their modern-day counterparts can truly match.
*
On a deeper level, I find wearing vintage anything - clothes, jewellery, whatever - more satisfying than anything Kate Moss could ever throw my way. After all, vintage is a throwback to a time when people took real pride in what they wore, invested in quality pieces that would never go out of style, and went to great lengths to look elegant and timeless.

I've read posts on other sites where reader opinion is squarely divided between 'Vintage rocks!' and 'It's horrendous!' I suppose in today's world of Mc-clothing labels and mass-produced wear, it's natural that anything different will catch the eye and provoke a reaction, positive or otherwise. But that, I feel, is what fashion is all about: to make people understand it is possible to wear something no one else can pull off.

A mental detour, if you please. When I was younger, I used to have this gorgeous antique-looking pewter heart-shaped locket that I misplaced in a moment of youthful carelessness. It's a pity, because I remember how long it took me to scrape up the money to buy it.

Oh well. I suppose that just gives me another reason to shop.

Tootling on about my retro obsession reminds me of an unusual compliment I received the other day. I'd shown up for work dressed in this darling little ruffled top, flared grey pants (my latest score from the Topshop sales), and my sky high red-and-beige stilettos. As I was puttering around my work station, my colleague Mr Photoshop Wizard (who happened to be strolling by) immediately screeched to a stop in front of me and exclaimed I reminded him of a picture he once saw of a 1940s woman advertising something-or-other (air travel, I think).
*
"Is that a good thing?" I anxiously asked. Mr PW laughed uproariously and assured me it was. The next thing I knew, he'd whipped out a camera and began snapping away like mad ("For my blog," he claimed). It came as no surprise that most of the pictures showed me looking a little baffled.

Despite my general misgivings over the proliferation of 'fast food' clothing chains, I admit that Forever 21 has a decent selection of vintage inspired jewellery. My only gripe is that their necklace chains discolour pretty damn fast. In a moment of frenzied shopping about two months ago, I'd bought three necklaces from there. And despite only having been worn a handful of times, all three are now unwearable, because parts of the necklaces have turned this weird dull shade of grey. Grossness.

On a happier note, I've decided to temporarily subdue the sharp pangs of my desire for new baubles. Behold, my newest purchase!
