Tulip Pleats

Here's a trend I simply do not get: tulip pleats. Endless variations have been popping up in shop window displays everywhere I go, and I confess I don't understand what the fuss is about.

I suspect my reluctance to try out something so knobbly-looking is due to my deep-rooted preference for clean silhouettes. Plus, I'm not a big fan of being unfavourably compared to Toblerones or durians.
